DIY Crayon Holder Craft Project with Children’s Handwriting

I wanted to create something to capture my children’s handwriting. It’s always something I’ve held dear and tried to preserve in my grown children as well.

Many years ago, I bought a wood burning kit for pyrography.

What is pyrography?

Pyrography or pyrogravure is the free handed art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. It is also known as pokerwork or wood burning. The term means “writing with fire”, from the Greek pur and graphos.

So we made these name blocks for holding their crayons and markers for now. As they grow older, I will fill in the holes and maybe cut them down to fit just their names and use as decorative blocks somehow.

And here’s a Video tutorial:

I bought this kit for maybe $20 at Hobby Lobby a long time ago. Our first project we did was carving a message to our boys (before they were born) into a baby box to hold their most precious memories.

My husband stained them when we were done and they looked beautiful. We each wrote a message in pencil and then I burned it in. I’m no expert or craftsman, but my kids will forever be able to keep their parent’s handwriting.
